Overview

It is a spectacle few have seen firsthand. Two foes trapped on an island in a remote part of Africa - and a battle to survive captured in high-definition over two years by award-winning filmmakers. Now, National Geographic takes viewers onto a unique battlefield in the Okavango Delta to witness the grueling fight for survival of highly specialized lions that prey almost exclusively on buffalo in Relentless Enemies.

00:00:41 There are predators and there are prey.
00:04:58 The skew-horned buffalo bull is the herd's pathfinder
00:07:48 before drying out to a faded savanna
00:11:16 the newborn calves.
00:16:13 with nothing but claws and teeth
00:19:44 they first panic them with a strange, growling charge.
00:24:19 The females that have run and hunted hard will need the next kill to be theirs.
00:28:05 These are the risk-takers.
00:31:16 And it is here that the whole pride is needed to distract and counter
00:34:58 but the herd has been emboldened by a wave of successes
00:38:14 The incensed Tsaro females could easily cross right in behind them
00:42:23 Most lions recover well from the deep cuts they endure in their violent life
00:45:23 but not these lions.
00:47:44 may be a further factor in making them into these enormous Okavango swamp cats.
00:52:47 Instantly, the buffalo settle
00:56:34 just in time for their own additions to Duba plains.
01:00:27 They still need the buffalo
01:05:24 rather than running away wildly
01:09:31 but to retire from the field, beaten, and to find the other females.
01:14:39 When they make their third kill of the day
01:19:05 and foreboding in their innocent, but perceptive, minds.
01:22:41 They are now rallying to his call.
01:25:47 It is a vivid display of determination
01:30:36 of a distinct race or even species of lion?
